The Olympians Learn to Make Stress Balls

Sometimes when we get upset, it's good to have something physical to do so we don't get too frustrated. Ms. Christine Lavallee, Olympians Evening Teacher/Counselor, taught a class in which each Olympian learned how to make a stress ball, and how to use the stress ball whenever they felt frustrated.

The Olympians made their stress balls out of balloons and sand. It took patience and perseverance, but the results were fabulous!

Squeezing the stress ball is just one of several Stress Strategies that are taught and practiced on the Olympian unit. Each student has a chart with six different strategies that they can choose to use when they become full of feeling in order to keep their problems small. Some of the other strategies they practice every day are: Exercise, Take Deep Breaths, Talk about your feelings, and Sit Quietly for One Minute. Each time they use a Stress Strategy successfully, they earn a sticker on their chart. The Olympian with the most stickers at the end of the week earns a special privilege!

The Olympians also have charts to take home, so they can work on keeping problems small at home, too!

Olympian Stress Strategy Chart and Stress Ball Supplies
Using a balloon and a cup full of sand, the Olympians each filled a balloon with sand to make their stress balls. They then tied a knot in the balloons. Making the stress balls proved to be stressful, as the kids had to try several times to pour the sand into the balloon. They all stuck with it and were successful!
