Wright School Class Projects

Ms. Patricia Parkins, Evening Teacher-Counselor on the Royals unit, has been practicing yoga weekly with her students.

She and Ms. Nina Lorch, Speech Language Pathologist, decided it would be fun to have the kids recreate some of their yoga poses using clay.

The kids first took turns in front of the class demonstrating their favorite yoga poses. Then they looked at some pipe cleaner models of the poses to get ideas about working in clay. Finally, they spent a messy but very fun hour recreating their yoga poses in clay. (See the pictures of the figures and read what the kids think about yoga and clay below.)

Once the figures were fired in the kiln, the kids placed them on display in the front lobby for visitors and parents to enjoy!

K. sculpted this "Warrior 2" pose.
What it’s like to do yoga is fun because it’s loosening your muscles and it feels good. The yoga pose that I made my sculpture out of is Warrior 2. I made that one because it looks very cool! Making my yoga sculpture was very fun the clay was very hard! And it was easy also I loved making my yoga sculpture.

The "Shavasana" pose by B.
Yoga is very fun for the body. It relaxes the brain and it’s really fun but always listen to your body. Final shavasana was the best because you are relaxed letting your brain rethink of things. You think of happy thoughts. That’s why I like it. It was really fun to make the sculpture. I got to make my own creation. First I thought about it and I made it with my hands.

"The Child" pose by Z.
Yoga feels good. What I like about my sculpture is how it bent its legs. It was really hard to make! It felt like jelly!

J1 created this sculpture of the "Cat" pose.
I like yoga because it’s good for my body. I made a cat sculpture. I like it because I like cats. They are soft and cuddly. We put balls under my head and my belly to keep the head and body up.

The "Cow" by J2
It is fun to do yoga because it massages your back. I like final shavasana because it is comfortable. The clay was squishy and wet.

"Half Shoulder Stand" by C.
Yoga is a good exercise for your body. I like half shoulder stand it is good for your body. But I feel the stretch in my back. It was fun making the sculpture. I liked playing with the clay and squishing it.

"Half Shoulder Stand" by S.
Yoga is relaxing to my body and it is peaceful. When you’re stressed it helps you relax. I like this pose because it is your neck. Making it was fun because we played with clay.

M. chose the "Yoga Mudra"
Yoga is really fun to do and it’s good for you. The pose was really easy so I chose it. It was my first time using clay.
